Interesting information about wedding rings and wedding bands
Where does the tradition of wedding rings come from, and what do they stand for?
Wedding rings were already worn in ancient times by the Greeks and Romans. According to an ancient legend, they believed that a vein led directly to the heart from the left ring finger ‒ the (Vena Amoris) ‒ and this belief led to the custom of wearing the wedding ring on the left ring finger. In countries including the USA, wedding bands are still worn on the left hand, while in Germany most people today wear wedding rings on their right hand. The circular form of the ring has neither beginning nor end, symbolising the endless, eternal love of the bridal couple. This symbolism of eternity is further underlined by the materials from which the wedding ring is crafted. Gold, platinum and silver are valuable precious metals that are as eternal as the marriage vows. A pair of wedding rings is a popular symbol of marriage; some rings are shown intertwined, and thus inseparable. In addition, the two rings are reminiscent of our modern symbol of infinity, a horizontal figure 8. Wedding bands thus have a deep, multi-faceted symbolism that extends far beyond their mere beauty as a piece of jewellery.
Wedding bands ‒ Their material and design
Wedding bands are probably the most important piece of jewellery a couple will ever buy. They must be attractive enough to give pleasure for a lifetime, and have a personal touch. Individual design is particularly important for wedding rings, as they represent such an important step in the life of a couple. The choice of a wedding ring should therefore not be hurried, but should be made with care and, above all, with emotion. The main criteria are naturally the couple's personal taste and ideas. Yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum ‒ decide for yourself which of these precious metals is your favourite. And don't forget the engagement ring, which the wedding bands should match or harmonise with.
Engraved wedding bands
Most couples decide to add a personal inscription, signature or symbol to the inside of their wedding bands. This tradition goes back to the ancient Romans; rings from this period have been found with the inscription Pignus amoris habes („You have a pledge of my love“). Today wedding rings are often engraved with the name or nickname of the partner, the date of the wedding or a motto with a special meaning for the couple. An engraving on a wedding ring comes from the heart and expresses the emotions of the couple. It adds a popular personal note to the wedding band, which is also seen in the growing trend of couples having a say in the design of their rings. Individually designed wedding rings by RenéSim are tailored one-of-a-kind pieces, and can naturally also include a personal inscription if desired.
